I have a few questions for you today. When you walk into your office do you see a sea of yellow, pink, or blue post it notes around your desk and counter?  Do you find yourself keeping your login id’s and passwords for the myriad of websites that you visit every day stuck to the front of your computer?  Do you order post it notes from your local stationary company in bulk? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then today I am going to challenge you to “Toss out those post it notes!”

My friend and fellow speaker and consultant, Dr. Doug Carlson, wrote an article for Dentaltown Magazine that was printed in last week’s publication called “Clutter vs. Sanity.” If you are member of Dentaltown, this article is a must read. Doug discusses the need to clean up our lives and toss out the unneeded “stuff” that we tend to collect over the course of our lives.  It doesn’t matter if it’s personal or work related for some odd reason we tend to not want to throw things away.  We clutter our lives and our space with stuff that can easily be cleaned out or better organized and not only lighten our load but more importantly give us a better environment in which to live and work.

Not only is it messy and unsightly to have these post it notes all around our area, it is probably not very smart to have your passwords stuck on the computer for everyone to see.  I get it, I honestly do.  We all have too much to remember these days, and it seems like every time we try to log onto a website we have to update our password.  Let’s see, did I use a capital “L” when I changed my password and only heaven knows whether I used”$” or “#.” If you’re like me you have so many password variations, it’s getting harder and harder to remember which one goes where.  Well here’s an idea, why not get a notebook and use it to keep track of those updates?  For security reasons you can lock it up so that no one else has access to it, and as an added bonus you can toss out those post it notes!

Now don’t get me wrong, post it notes can be a necessity at the front desk, and I would be lying if I said I never used them.  I am simply saying let’s not decorate our offices with them.  It clutters our space and makes us look unorganized to our patients.  So go get yourself a notebook or two and keep your id numbers and passwords in one and tips for starting the printer in the other.  The tips notebook is for everyone, maybe now the team can fix the printer without trying to talk to you while you’re on the phone. (I can’t promise that one.) I can promise you that you will feel a lot better about your new clutter free space and your patients will think you are one organized manager!  What are you waiting for?  Go “Toss Out Those Post It Notes!”
